IIT (ISM) Dhanbad celebrated Ambedkar Jayanti with great enthusiasm at the GJLT auditorium, bringing together students, faculty and staff to honour the legacy of B. R. Ambedkar.

The highlight of the event was the address by Chief Guest Shri Sunny Raj, Deputy Development Commissioner, Dhanbad, who described Dr Ambedkar as a global icon whose vision transcends boundaries.

He emphasised that while India has made significant progress, challenges like social inequality and remnants of untouchability still persist. Stressing Ambedkar’s message of “educate, organize and transform,” he urged students to dedicate themselves to knowledge, research and nation-building. He also called upon young minds to return and serve society, noting that the true tribute to Ambedkar lies in collective upliftment.

Shri Raj further highlighted Dr Ambedkar’s contributions beyond social justice, particularly in economics, policymaking and his role in shaping institutions like the Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Constitution.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Prof. A.C.S. Rao, who reflected on the prevalence of casteism in earlier times and acknowledged that while the situation has improved, continued efforts are required. He also appreciated the proactive role of the SC/ST Cell at IIT (ISM) in fostering inclusivity.

Ms. Sukhbinder Kaur, Deputy Registrar, presented the citation on Dr Ambedkar, highlighting his life, struggles and enduring contributions to the nation.

Shri Prabodh Pandey, Registrar, spoke about the significance of Dr Ambedkar’s life and work, noting that his dedication to education and relentless hard work not only led to academic excellence but also enabled him to render exceptional service to the nation. He emphasised the importance of books in shaping one’s career and thought process and encouraged students to imbibe Ambedkar’s ideas.

Prof. S.K. Gupta, Dean (Students Welfare), highlighted the importance of equality across gender, caste and religion. He remarked that incorporating equality in one’s thinking can bring meaningful change in society and urged everyone to practice justice and inclusivity in their daily lives.

Prof. Ajit Kumar and Prof. K.P. Ajit were also present on the dais along with other distinguished guests.

The event also featured a series of cultural programmes, adding vibrancy to the celebration and reinforcing the message of unity, equality and social harmony.
