Top Science & Tech Honour for IIT (ISM) Director: Prof. Sukumar Mishra Wins Om Prakash Bhasin Award 2023 for Engineering Excellence
In a major recognition of academic brilliance and technological leadership, Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, has been selected for the prestigious Shri Om Prakash Bhasin Award 2023 in the field of Engineering, including Energy and Aerospace. The award, which carries a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh along with a citation and plaque, honours his outstanding contributions to engineering research and innovation.
Instituted in memory of the late Shri Om Prakash Bhasin, the Shri Om Prakash Bhasin Awards for Science and Technology are conferred for significant contributions of a pure or applied nature as well as for exemplary scientific leadership. The awards recognise work that has substantial impact on national development and brings distinction to the country. The award has a distinguished legacy of honouring eminent scientists and engineers, including luminaries such as Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Dr. Raja Ramanna, Dr. K. Kasturirangan, Prof. K. L. Chopra, Dr. R. A. Mashelkar and Dr. K. S. Narasimhan, and has been conferred by top national leaders including Prime Ministers, Presidents and Vice Presidents.
Prof. Mishra’s selection reflects his pioneering work in power systems, renewable energy integration, and smart grid technologies—areas critical to India’s sustainable development trajectory. A globally respected academician, he has consistently driven innovation at the intersection of energy systems and emerging technologies.
With an illustrious career spanning academia, research, and institutional leadership, Prof. Mishra has held key positions at premier institutions. Before assuming charge as Director of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, he served at IIT Delhi in leadership roles including Associate Dean (R&D) and Dean at IIT Delhi–Abu Dhabi campus. He began his academic journey at Sambalpur University and later contributed significantly at Biju Patnaik University of Technology.
His scholarly excellence is reflected in numerous prestigious accolades, including the INSA Young Scientist Medal, INAE Young Engineer Award, NASI-Reliance Platinum Jubilee Award, and INAE Outstanding Teachers Award. He is a Fellow of IEEE, INAE, NASI, and several other leading professional bodies, underscoring his global academic stature.
Prof. Mishra has also played a vital role in industry-academia collaboration, working with organisations such as TATA Power and Microtek, and founding SILOV Solutions Private Limited to promote applied technological innovations.
